Flu Season Worsens, Vaccine Match Uncertain

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that this year’s flu season may be a poor match for the most recent flu shot. Recent data from hospitals and doctor’s offices suggests it is one of the worst seasons on record since 2009.

According to the CDC, over 910,000 people have been hospitalized with the flu since October 1st. Despite receiving the vaccine, some individuals still contracted the virus. Dr. Penny Borenstein from San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department believes early data suggests the current influenza vaccine may not be effective against this season’s strain.

Flu cases are on the rise across the country, with many residents experiencing severe symptoms. However, experts note that flu season is expected to wind down in the coming weeks. As a result, caution is advised for those who have not yet received their flu shot or have been exposed to someone with the flu.
