Flu Vaccine Reminded as Deaths Among Youth Rise

Flu deaths among teenagers are on the rise, with three recent cases reported in San Diego County. Dr. Ankita Kadakia, Interim Public Health Officer, emphasizes that getting vaccinated is crucial to avoid serious illness and death.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu shots for everyone 6 months and older due to changing virus strains each year. The vaccine is available at doctors’ offices, retail pharmacies, and public health centers, and is covered by medical insurance.

With nearly 80% of eligible teens in San Diego County unvaccinated, officials urge families with children and teenagers to get vaccinated as soon as possible. In addition to vaccination, taking simple precautions like frequent handwashing, staying away from sick people, and avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth can help prevent the spread of illness.

This flu season has seen 73 reported deaths in San Diego County, mostly among those over 50 years old. Public health officials stress that it’s not too late to get vaccinated and protect yourself and loved ones from serious illness.
