Flyers’ Double Draft Pick Surprise: Size and Skill Abound

The Philadelphia Flyers made a surprise move in the 2025 NHL Draft, selecting two players with significant size and skill. In the first round, they chose forward Porter Martone, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 204 pounds. The Flyers then traded up to select center Jack Nesbitt, who measures 6-foot-4 and weighs 187 pounds.

While not initially planned, the draft’s outcome resulted in two players that will bring size to the team. “It just happened that way,” said Flyers general manager Danny Briere. Martone, an Ontario Hockey League player, led his team with 61 assists and 98 points in 57 games. His performance earned comparisons to Edmonton Oilers forward Corey Perry and Ottawa Senators forward Brady Tkachuk.

Martone, who served as captain of his team, emphasized the importance of continuous improvement: “I grew as a leader and I think I just grew as an overall person this season.” The Flyers’ unexpected draft picks have raised expectations for their future.
