When it comes to flying, many of us are aware that the dry cabin air can wreak havoc on our skin. However, not everyone is sure what we should be doing to prepare and take care of our skin during flights.
According to Dr. Anjali Mahto, a consultant dermatologist and founder of Self London, planes are not ideal environments for hydrated skin. “Aircraft cabins have extremely low humidity, which can lead to dehydration, impaired barrier function, and increased sensitivity,” she explains.
For shorter flights, skin may experience some discomfort, but longer flights (over six hours) can cause more havoc. To combat this, Dr. Mahto recommends applying gentle, hydrating ingredients such as ceramides, squalane, hyaluronic acid, or glycerin to retain moisture.
A trusty barrier cream is essential for preventing transepidermal water loss and should be fragrance-free to minimize sensitivity. Don’t forget SPF if you’re sitting near a window seat, as UV exposure at high altitude can still penetrate even with cloud cover.
Additionally, face mists containing hypochlorous acid can be beneficial for sensitive or breakout-prone skin, but make sure to follow up with a moisturizer or occlusive layer to lock in hydration. And, as Dr. Mahto warns, avoid using exfoliating acids, retinoids, or strong actives before flying, as they can exacerbate dryness and irritation.
For those with acne-prone skin, flying bare-faced is recommended, but a tinted hydrating sunscreen can be a compromise that provides coverage without the drawbacks of long-wear formulas. By following these expert tips, you can help minimize the impact of flying on your skin and enjoy a more radiant glow during your next trip.
