The Foo Fighters have recruited Ilan Rubin as their new drummer, following the departure of Josh Freese just over two months ago. Rubin is best known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, serving as the band’s touring drummer since 2009 and being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.
The move comes after Freese parted ways with the Foo Fighters to join Nine Inch Nails again. The two musicians had a brief reunion, with Freese rejoining Nails just weeks before their North American tour is set to begin on August 6. Rubin will make his debut with the Foo Fighters starting from their upcoming shows in Indonesia, Singapore, Tokyo, and Osaka later this month.
In an Instagram post, Josh Freese confirmed his departure from the Foo Fighters, stating that the band had decided “to go in a different direction.” The drummer also expressed surprise and disappointment at being let go. Freese will now return to Nine Inch Nails, which he previously left in 2008 to focus on family life.
The Foo Fighters released their first new music since 2023, celebrating their 30th anniversary with the song “Today’s Song,” written by frontman Dave Grohl. The band has paid tribute to late drummer Taylor Hawkins and thanked Freese for his service.
