A recent review by scientists has warned that food packaging could be increasing exposure to cancer-causing chemicals. The warning comes despite efforts to make plastic packaging more environmentally friendly. Experts have long known that substances used in modern plastics can leach into food, potentially triggering health problems such as cancer, infertility, and birth defects.
The Food Packaging Forum Foundation in Switzerland has warned that recycling plastics can lead to an accumulation of harmful chemicals, which can leech into food through simple storage or heating. Black plastic products, like kitchen utensils, may contain illicitly recycled plastic waste that poses additional risks.
Studies have found that 85% of kitchen utensils made from recycled black plastic contain fireproof substances linked to numerous health problems. Other substances of concern include PFASs, BPA, and phthalates, which have been linked to multiple cancers, asthma, and fertility issues.
The authors of the report also highlighted the risk of chemicals seeping into ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which are prepackaged and kept for extended periods in plastic packaging. These products often contain synthetic colorings, sweeteners, and preservatives that extend shelf life. Britain is estimated to consume 57% of UPFs, with the US estimated to have an even higher figure.
Experts recommend developing food packaging materials that do not pose a risk to customers. They suggest shifting away from materials known to release high levels of synthetic chemicals and microplastics into foodstuffs, including paper, plastics, and coated metals.
