Ford’s 1.5-liter Dragon engine, used in the Bronco Sports and Escapes, has been hit with its largest recall yet. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a massive recall for 521,778 units in November 2022 due to cracked fuel injectors. This issue can lead to less efficient engines and even fire hazards.
The engine’s problems were first reported by Ford in 54 complaints of engine fires. A leak detection fix was implemented to address the issue, and follow-up recalls have since been issued for other affected vehicles.
Other notable EcoBoost recalls include 208,584 Escapes equipped with 1.6-liter engines in 2017 due to cracked cylinder heads and oil leaks, and a 2012-2018 Ford Focus recall of 1,280,596 units for malfunctioning canister purge valves.
In general, if your VIN is included in a recall, you should contact a dealer to schedule an appointment for free repairs. However, some recalls may expire or be impossible due to replacement part availability issues.
It’s essential to check your vehicle’s VIN on the NHTSA website to ensure it’s not affected by any ongoing recalls.
