The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD has officially become the fastest American production car to lap the iconic Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a sub-seven-minute record of 6 minutes and 57.685 seconds. The car’s development was driven by the ambition to rival European supercars in the sports car segment.
Ford engineers had set an ambitious goal from the start: to break the seven-minute barrier on the notoriously challenging track. “That was the objective from day one,” said Greg Goodall, chief program engineer. “We wanted to take all the goodness from racing and make it into a street-legal monster that can compete with European supercars.”
The Mustang GTD’s record-breaking lap came after several months of testing in Europe, where social media leaks had revealed Ford’s plans. Despite some technical issues, including poor weather conditions during one of the few official timed laps, the car still managed to set a new benchmark for American performance cars.
While the Mustang GTD has beaten its rivals, with a time of 6:59.93, it still falls short of the Porsche 911 GT3’s lap record. However, Ford is not satisfied with this result and plans to continue pushing the limits of their car.
“We’re proud to be the first American automaker with a car that can lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes,” said CEO Jim Farley. “We know there’s much more time to find with Mustang GTD, and we’ll be back.” The new Corvette ZR1 will also pose a challenge for the Mustang GTD’s American title next year, but Ford is eager to see how much more performance can be squeezed out of their car.
