Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for over 694,000 Bronco Sport and Escape vehicles due to a faulty fuel injector that could cause a fire risk inside the engine compartment. The recall affects 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles with 1.5-liter engines.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the fuel injector may crack, allowing fuel or vapor to accumulate near ignition sources, potentially leading to an underhood fire. Ford has stated that it is aware of underhood fire incidents related to this condition but has not reported any injuries.
The recall includes vehicles that were previously subject to other recalls issued by Ford in November 2022 and March 2024. An “interim remedy” will be provided, which involves updating the engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection. This update is expected to help detect cracked injectors and mitigate the fire risk.
Ford has estimated that the cost of addressing this issue will be around $570 million, which will be reflected in its second-quarter 2025 results. The company plans to publish its second-quarter earnings report on July 30 after the market closes.
As part of this recall, Ford is also recalling additional vehicles produced with these faulty fuel injectors that were not previously subject to a recall. Owners of affected vehicles will receive letters informing them of the issue and an interim remedy, which they can bring their vehicle to a dealership once the final solution is ready.
