Ford Motor Company is recalling 272,827 Broncos and Mavericks vehicles due to a power problem linked to batteries made by Camel Battery of China. The issue involves internal manufacturing defects, including weld failures that can cause open circuits. Despite reports of cars losing power or failing to start, no accidents, fires, or injuries have been reported.
The affected vehicles were produced between February 2021 and October 2023 when Ford stopped using those specific batteries. The problem is estimated to affect only 1% of the vehicles equipped with the defective batteries.
In November, Ford pledged to review its recall decision-making process and ensure independent oversight for a three-year period after facing a U.S. government penalty for moving too slowly on earlier recalls. The National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that previous recalls of Broncos and Mavericks in 2021-23 had caused some vehicles to lose power, including hazard lights, without warning.
The fix involves software updates to detect battery issues and provide drivers with warnings.
