Kristine Barnett, the Indiana mom who accused her adopted daughter Natalia Grace of masquerading as an adult, is now facing renewed attention after the ID docuseries and Hulu’s Good American Family series have drawn more interest to the case.
Barnett was adamant that the 8-year-old Ukrainian child she and her husband Michael Barnett adopted in 2010 was actually a 22-year-old woman who had threatened to harm them and their three biological children. However, DNA test results from a 2024 ID docuseries have confirmed that Natalia Grace is approximately 21 years old.
In 2012, Kristine and Michael changed Natalia’s age from 8 to 22, a decision that Kristine claimed law enforcement had recommended. The couple left Natalia alone in an apartment in Lafayette, Ind. for six years before moving to Canada without her. They were charged with neglecting a dependent but neither was convicted.
In recent months, Barnett has denied accusations of abuse against Natalia, calling them “just plain false.” She also labeled Natalia as a “sociopath” who manipulates people’s sympathies towards her. However, experts have disputed Kristine’s claims, saying that sociopathy is not something one can simply decide on.
Despite the evidence refuting her accusations, Kristine has maintained her innocence and continues to advocate for children with disabilities. She recently released a new memoir titled Witch Hunt: The Kristine Barnett Story and has been open about her current living situation.
