Former City Corporation Counsel Chosen as First Deputy Mayor

Randy Mastro, who withdrew his bid to become corporation counsel due to a heated hearing by the City Council, has been appointed as the city’s first deputy mayor. The appointment aims to round out a new team of aides following high-level staffers’ departures.

Mastro, a seasoned lawyer and former Rudy Giuliani aide, boasts an impressive track record in handling challenging situations. He previously served as chair of Citizens Union, a non-partisan group focused on good government.

The City Council had criticized Mastro’s past work, including representing landlords and anti-congestion pricing groups, sparking controversy during the pandemic. However, Mayor Eric Adams defended the decision to appoint Mastro, stating that he believes in the city’s success.

Mastro will replace Camille Joseph-Varlack, who served as interim first deputy mayor briefly following Maria Torres-Springer’s resignation. The role of first deputy mayor oversees the city’s budget office and works closely with other agencies on city goals.

John Avlon, chairman of Citizens Union, welcomed Mastro’s appointment while also criticizing Mayor Adams’ leadership. Despite past criticisms from the organization, Avlon expressed confidence in Mastro’s ability to lead the city effectively.
