Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted on Obstruction and False Statements Charges

Former FBI Director James Comey is set to turn himself in on Friday after being indicted by a grand jury on two counts of alleged false statements within the jurisdiction of the legislative branch and obstruction of congressional proceedings. The indictment alleges that Comey obstructed a congressional investigation into the disclosure of sensitive information, violating 18 USC 1505.

Comey’s arraignment is scheduled for October 9 in Alexandria Courtroom 600 before District Judge Michael S. Nachmanoff. He has been under investigation by the FBI since July, with the probe focusing on whether he lied to Congress during his September 2020 testimony about his handling of the original Trump-Russia probe.

The Department of Justice announced that Comey would be held accountable for allegedly misleading the American people and abusing his position of power. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “No one is above the law,” and expressed commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable.

Comey has been accused of making a false statement when he claimed not to have authorized an anonymous source at the FBI. The indictment also alleges that he made other false statements during his testimony. Comey acknowledged that he stood up to President Donald Trump, but maintained innocence and expressed confidence in the federal judicial system.

The case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, with prosecutors having five years to bring a charge. Former CIA Director John Brennan is also under criminal investigation related to the Trump-Russia probe.

In response to the indictment, President Trump posted on his Truth Social account, stating that Comey was “one of the worst human beings” this country has ever been exposed to and expressing satisfaction that he would be held responsible for his crimes.
