Former Heat Employee Accused of Stealing Over 400 Game-Worn Jerseys

A former Miami Heat employee, Marcos Thomas Perez, has been charged with stealing over 400 game-worn jerseys and other items from the team’s arena, the Kaseya Center. According to reports, Perez sold at least 100 of these stolen items for profit, including a LeBron James jersey from Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals that he allegedly sold for $100K. The jersey later sold for $3.68 million at a Sotheby’s auction.

The investigation into Perez’s actions began in early 2024 after game-worn jerseys from James, Shaquille O’Neal, and Dwyane Wade, among others, went missing from the Heat’s arena. Perez worked as a security officer for the team from 2016 to 2021 and then joined the NBA as a security employee from 2022 until his recent departure.

Perez accessed the equipment room multiple times to steal over 400 game-worn jerseys and other items, which he then sold online for approximately $2 million over a three-year period. He shipped these stolen items across state lines, often for prices well below their market value.

Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Perez’s home in April and seized almost 300 items that the Heat confirmed had been stolen from their arena. The investigation is ongoing, with both the Heat organization and the league declining to comment during this time.
