A former NFL assistant coach, Matt Weiss, has been charged with hacking into thousands of college athletes’ computer accounts to access intimate photos and videos. According to an indictment filed in federal court in Detroit, Weiss accessed databases of over 100 colleges and universities, downloading personal information and medical data of more than 150,000 athletes.
Weiss gained access to the social media, email, and cloud storage accounts of over 2,000 athletes, targeting primarily female college athletes based on their school affiliation, athletic history, and physical characteristics. He researched and targeted these women to obtain private photographs and videos intended for intimate partners only.
The indictment states that Weiss kept notes on the downloaded photos and videos, commenting on the bodies and sexual preferences, and returned years later to look for new images. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Detroit, with Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck vowing to “move aggressively” to protect citizens’ private accounts.
Weiss was fired from his role as Michigan’s co-offensive coordinator in 2023 after failing to cooperate with an investigation into his computer access. His home was searched by police in January 2023, shortly before he was let go. Weiss is charged with 14 counts of unauthorized computer access and 10 counts of identity theft.
