A former NFL player from Oklahoma has been convicted on six felony counts related to dogfighting operations. LeShon Eugene Johnson, 54, faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for his role in the illicit business.
Johnson, a running back for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals, and New York Giants from 1994 to 1999, was found guilty of possessing dogs intended for animal fighting. Prosecutors alleged he operated Mal Kant Kennels and selectively bred pit-bull-type dogs for fighting, resulting in significant profits.
The government seized over 190 dogs from Johnson’s custody earlier this year, with many having won up to five dog fights. His attorney argued that Johnson was a legitimate breeder of American pit bull terriers and not accused of engaging in dogfighting. The FBI Director stated that those who perpetuate such cruelty will face justice, thanks to the efforts of law enforcement partners.
Johnson previously pleaded guilty to state animal fighting charges in 2004, receiving a five-year deferred sentence. He now faces a formal sentencing at a later date, with the court determining his punishment for these felony counts.
