The teenage son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner has died due to carbon monoxide poisoning, authorities in Costa Rica said. Miller Gardner, 14, was found dead at a hotel on the Manuel Antonio beach while staying with his family.
The cause of death was confirmed after a test showed a high level of carboxyhemoglobin, a compound that forms when carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the blood. In this case, the saturation level was 64%, which is considered lethal.
An investigation found a “layer” on the boy’s organs, suggesting a high presence of the poisonous gas. Initially, asphyxiation was thought to be the cause of death, but an autopsy revealed that theory was incorrect.
The family had reported feeling ill after dining at a nearby restaurant on the night of March 20 and received treatment from the hotel doctor. However, it’s unclear if this is related to carbon monoxide poisoning or food poisoning.
Brett Gardner, who played for the Yankees from 2008 to 2021, has been left to grieve the loss of his son.
