Brian Matusz, a former Baltimore Orioles pitcher, has passed away at the age of 37. The team announced his death on Tuesday, January 7, with a statement that described him as a “staple in our clubhouse” and a beloved figure throughout the organization.
Matusz played for the Orioles from 2009 to 2016 and was known for his passion for baseball and community involvement. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2005 but opted to play at the University of San Diego, where he achieved notable success as a collegiate player.
The left-handed pitcher made his MLB debut in 2009 and went on to pitch in 280 regular season games, starting 69 of them. He also appeared in two Orioles’ postseason teams and had an overall ERA of 4.92.
After being traded to the Atlanta Braves in 2016, Matusz signed with the Cubs but was released soon after. He then pitched for several minor league teams before retiring in 2019.
Matusz’s death has been met with condolences from the baseball community, and his family and friends are receiving support during this difficult time.
