Matt Weiss, a former assistant coach who worked with John Harbaugh on the Baltimore Ravens and Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan, has been indicted on 24 counts related to unauthorized access to computer data and identity theft. The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan charged Weiss in a 24-count indictment.
Weiss allegedly accessed student athlete databases belonging to over 100 colleges and universities, downloading sensitive information from more than 150,000 athletes. He then used this information to obtain access to personal social media, email, and cloud storage accounts of over 2,000 target athletes, as well as another 1,300 students and alumni.
The indictment claims Weiss downloaded intimate photos and videos from these accounts without consent, violating the privacy of many individuals. The investigation into Weiss’s actions began two years ago when he was fired by Michigan University amid a police investigation.
Weiss worked with both Harbaugh teams in various roles before being hired as Michigan’s quarterbacks coach in 2021. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator but was dismissed shortly after the 2022 season ended, following his termination from the university.
