Former Royal Ballet Star Leaves Russia Amid Controversy Over Ukraine Invasion

Former Royal Ballet star Sergei Polunin has left Russia with his family despite being a vocal supporter of President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Polunin, who was born in southern Ukrainian city Kherson and acquired Russian citizenship in 2018, expressed feelings of unease and disconnection from Russia.

Polunin had previously been involved in pro-war activities, including helping organize donation drives for Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine and performing as one of Putin’s surrogates during the presidential election. However, he has now announced that his time in Russia has “expired” and he is seeking a new home for himself and his family.

The reasons behind Polunin’s departure are unclear, but it comes amid reports of harassment and intimidation, including receiving unsolicited packages with potential explosive devices. Polunin had previously complained about these incidents in the summer.

Polunin’s past actions have been met with criticism and backlash, particularly after his pro-war performance was canceled in Italy following online backlash. He has also faced repercussions in Uzbekistan for deviating from a previously agreed program.

Despite being a vocal supporter of Putin, Polunin has expressed admiration for the Russian people, stating that they are “very kind and humane.” However, he is now seeking to leave Russia due to feelings of disconnection and unease.
