Diego Sanchez, a 43-year-old former UFC fighter, is currently in custody after being arrested on gun-related charges. Sanchez was booked at 12:01 a.m. Friday and faces two charges: Shooting at or from a motor vehicle (a fourth-degree felony) and Negligent use of a deadly weapon (a misdemeanor).
The incident occurred when Sanchez, who was a passenger in a vehicle, fired a shot into the air while passing by a crash scene. Police followed the vehicle, leading to his arrest. Sanchez denied firing the shot but admitted that there was a gun in the vehicle.
Sanchez’s representative has spoken out about the fighter’s struggles with substance abuse and the fact that he underwent rehabilitation twice in the past. The former UFC champion, who won the Ultimate Fighter title in 2006, had a successful 15-year career in the UFC before his final appearance in 2020.
Sanchez is currently being held with a judge yet to set bail for him. The driver of the vehicle, who faces no charges, described Sanchez’s behavior during the encounter, saying he laughed while speaking to authorities.
