Sara Jane Moore, the woman who attempted to shoot President Gerald Ford in 1975, has died at a nursing facility in Tennessee. She was 95 years old.
Moore’s actions were inspired by the radical politics of the time and the Patricia Hearst kidnapping. She had been arrested on a gun charge just days before attempting to kill Ford. The attempt ended with her firing one shot that missed Ford, who was saved by Oliver Sipple.
Moore was sentenced to life in prison but escaped once in 1979. She was released on parole in 2007 and spent the rest of her years in rehabilitation facilities.
In a 2009 interview, Moore said she believed shooting Ford would trigger a violent revolution. When discussing her actions with a journalist in 2024, she compared trying to kill Ford to being in a play, rehearsing for the moment when it’s time to act.
