Epic Games, the creator of popular battle royale game Fortnite, has announced its return to the US iOS App Store after a nearly three-year absence. In 2020, Epic Games filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple over the company’s requirements for in-app purchases, which imposed a 30% revenue cut.
A judge in 2021 ruled that this practice was anticompetitive and ordered Apple to allow developers to include links to external payment websites. However, Apple has since allegedly violated this ruling.
As part of an agreement, Epic Games has offered to return Fortnite to the App Store worldwide if Apple extends its “friction-free, Apple-tax-free framework” globally. If this happens, Epic Games will drop all litigation related to the matter.
The deal’s terms have not been officially confirmed by Apple, but the company has yet to respond to The National News Desk’s request for comment on the proposal.
