A fourth case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in a backyard flock in Dawson County, Nebraska. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported the discovery, which affects 219 birds. State Veterinarian Dr. Roger Dudley urged poultry owners to strengthen biosecurity measures, such as limiting contact with wild birds, washing hands, and changing clothing and shoes before handling poultry to prevent virus spread.
HPAI spreads through bird secretions, contaminated environments, or direct contact with infected animals. Symptoms in poultry include sudden death, reduced appetite, decreased egg production, respiratory issues, and diarrhea. Wild birds may carry the virus without showing symptoms, while domesticated birds often face severe illness or mortality. The NDA advises producers to monitor flocks closely and report suspicious deaths or health changes immediately.
