Fox Attacks Four Hikers in San Marcos Park

A fox attacked four people at the Purgatory Creek Natural Area in San Marcos, Texas, on Sunday, May 11. Michelle Danos, a college student, was bitten several times and had to fight off the animal six times before escaping. The city said that if the fox is not found, it will be considered a presumed positive for rabies due to the nature of the incidents.

Danos left work early to go hiking on the trail when she heard rustling in the foliage and turned around to find a fox approaching her. She fought back by hitting the animal with rocks and throwing it into trees, but it kept coming back. After six attempts, the fox finally stopped attacking, allowing Danos to escape.

The city has advised visitors to avoid the area, especially the Beatrice, Dante, and Ripheus trails, until further notice. An Animal Service Manager warned that foxes rarely attack humans, but emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention immediately if someone is bitten or scratched by an infected animal.

Danos received several shots for rabies at the hospital and continues to recover. She is now using a crutch to walk and has been advised to receive more shots in the coming days. The fox remains at large, and its fate is still unknown.
