A fox in Lowndes County, Alabama has tested positive for rabies after repeatedly attacking a hunter. The incident serves as a reminder to take precautions during the warmer months when animal movement increases.
According to Dr. Dee W. Jones, State Public Health Veterinarian, there is no seasonal variation in rabies cases, but more animal activity does lead to an uptick in positive cases. This brings attention to vaccination for pets and reporting any strange-acting wildlife.
To avoid exposure to rabies, Alabamians can take the following precautions:
* Confine pets within a fenced area or with a leash
* Dispose of uneaten pet food and scraps safely
* Avoid feeding or keeping wildlife as pets
* Refrain from approaching unusual behavior in wildlife or domestic animals
* Teach children not to interact with stray or wild animals
Additionally, Alabama state law requires dogs, cats, and ferrets 12 weeks old and older be current on their rabies vaccinations.
