France Cracks Down on Smoking with New Beach and Park Ban

France is banning smoking in areas where young people socialize from July 1, aiming to reduce the habit’s attractiveness and impact. The ban applies to beaches, parks, sports facilities, bus stops, gardens near schools, and other designated areas. A €135 fine will be imposed on those caught smoking in these zones.

Despite a historically low smoking rate of around 12%, tobacco consumption still claims 75,000 lives annually in France, equivalent to 200 deaths per day. The country’s health costs from smoking-related issues amount to €150 billion each year.

The move is part of the government’s efforts to “denormalize tobacco” and discourage smoking among young people. With tobacco sales declining by over 11.5% last year, this new ban aims to further reduce smoking rates and promote healthier habits in French society.
