France Enforces Strict Outdoor Smoking Ban for Public Health

The French government has implemented a sweeping outdoor smoking ban, effective July 1, to reduce air pollution and protect children’s health. Designated public areas such as beaches, parks, and bus stops will be off-limits to cigarette smoke. Smokers can still enjoy a cigarette at outdoor cafes, known as “terrasses,” but must be seated. The ban aims to improve the nation’s air quality, with 23.1% of French adults already not smoking daily. However, critics argue that the ban limits personal freedom and may drive smokers to hidden areas where enforcement is harder to monitor.
