A second power outage has struck the French Riviera region, just a day after a massive blackout in Cannes, leaving at least 45,000 homes without electricity. The fire at a substation in Nice is believed to have been caused by a malicious act, with police finding tyre tracks and a broken door. The mayor of Nice has denounced the incident as “malicious acts” affecting the country.
The power outage occurred on Sunday evening, impacting nearby towns including Saint-Laurent-du-Var and Cagnes-sur-Mer, before power was restored in the morning. Authorities have launched an investigation into “organised arson”, while officials also plan to reinforce security around Nice’s electric sites.
No link has been established between the two incidents, but they come as authorities are investigating the previous Cannes blackout, which may have been caused by an arson attack on a substation. The Nice prosecutor said investigations are underway to clarify the damage and manner of the act.
