France has proposed replacing Israeli forces with United Nations peacekeepers, including French troops, at key points in southern Lebanon by February 18. The move aims to ensure Israel leaves the country by the original deadline.
A truce deal brokered by the US in November granted Israeli troops 60 days to withdraw from the area, which they have used since October to target Hezbollah terrorists. However, Israel now seeks an extension, asking to stay at five key posts for another 10 days.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said his country has formulated a proposal that meets Israel’s security needs while allowing for a complete withdrawal. The UN backs the idea and will deploy peacekeepers, including French forces, to observation points in southern Lebanon.
