A teaching assistant has died after being stabbed by a 14-year-old student outside a school in Nogent, north-east France. The victim, 31, was attacked on Tuesday morning as pupils’ bags were being checked by police. French President Emmanuel Macron described the attack as “a senseless wave of violence” and declared the nation to be in mourning.
The suspect is currently in custody, and the motive for the attack remains unconfirmed. Prime Minister François Bayrou has called for increased action against knife crime, saying that the threat of bladed weapons among children has become critical. He also vowed to make widespread scourge a public enemy.
Opposition politicians have criticized the government’s response, with Marine Le Pen denouncing what she called “trivialization of ultraviolence”. The far-right leader accused Macron of denying “savagery” in comments made over the weekend.
