French President Emmanuel Macron issued a warning to China, stating that if Beijing fails to prevent North Korea from taking part in Russia’s war on Ukraine, NATO may become more involved in Asia. Macron said China should stop North Korea from engaging in European soil if it wishes to prevent NATO involvement in Southeast Asia. France has historically opposed NATO expansion into Asia and led a campaign against the opening of a liaison office in Japan in 2023.
