Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, has collaborated with Airstream to create a travel trailer that embodies his design principles. The Airstream Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian Limited Edition Travel Trailer is inspired by Wright’s organic and Usonian architecture.
The trailer was designed by Airstream’s in-house team at their Ohio base and a team from Wright’s Taliesin West home and studio in Scottsdale, Arizona. The teams aimed to merge Airstream’s innovative mobile living approach with Wright’s design philosophy, which emphasizes harmony with nature and functionality.
The 28-foot-long trailer can accommodate up to four people and features two convertible beds, a kitchenette, dining area, storage, and a restroom. Travellers enter through a main entry with a metallic screen door, both adorned with the Gordon Leaf pattern, created by Wright apprentice Eugene Masselink.
The interior design is characterized by clean lines, natural materials, and modular functions, reflecting Wright’s Usonian principles. The trailer features a sofa-bed, wooden desk, dining table, and two folding chairs that can be stowed away. A narrow hallway leads to the bathroom, lined with storage and a refrigerator.
The exterior design incorporates awnings inspired by Wright’s canvas panels and a thin gold band around the trailer body. The trailer is powered by rooftop solar panels and lithium batteries, making it an eco-friendly option for those seeking adventure on the road.
Only 200 units will be produced, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has expressed its enthusiasm for this collaboration, which brings Wright’s timeless ideas to life on the road.
