Free or Paid: How to Stay Secure on Old Windows 10 PCs

If you’re using an old PC running Windows 10, don’t worry – your machine will still receive security updates for about another year. The decade-old operating system is used by nearly 41% of PC owners and has around 400 million computers.

Microsoft has promised to continue supporting Windows 10 with one more year of security updates, but only if you enroll in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This program costs $30 for most users, except Europeans who can enroll for free. However, there are two other free enrollment options: using your existing Windows Backup and syncing settings to OneDrive or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.

To get started, make sure you’re running the latest version of Windows 10 (version 22H2) and have administrative privileges on your PC. Then, follow these steps:

1. Open Settings and click on Windows Update.
2. Check if you see a message saying “Windows 10 support ends in October 2025” and “Enroll in Extended Security Updates to help keep your device secure.”
3. Click the link to enroll in the ESU program.

The enrollment wizard will guide you through three options: paying $30, syncing settings with OneDrive, or redeeming Microsoft Rewards points. You can enroll at any time until October 13, 2026, but note that this is a temporary solution to give users more time to upgrade to Windows 11.

While the ESU program provides security updates for now, it’s not a long-term solution. Microsoft says it’s only meant to bridge the gap while you migrate to a newer, supported platform.

If you’re not ready to upgrade to Windows 11 yet, the free ESU program is a welcome stopgap. So, don’t wait – enroll in the program and keep your old PC secure for another year.
