ShrinkLocker ransomware has left files scrambled for victims worldwide. A free decryption tool, developed by Bitdefender, can help restore access to encrypted data.
In May, the malware strain was discovered using VBScript and Microsoft Windows’ built-in BitLocker encryption feature. Although considered outdated methods, ShrinkLocker proved effective due to its simplicity.
“By using a combination of Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and scheduled tasks, it can encrypt multiple systems within a network in as little as 10 minutes per device,” explained Martin Zugec, technical solutions director at Bitdefender.
The free decryption tool is available for download from Bitdefender’s website. However, users are advised to note that decryptor tools have limitations, often restricted to specific timeframes or software versions.
Additionally, while the tool can restore data, it does not prevent future attacks or stop digital thieves from selling leaked information. Users are recommended to review guidance on configuring BitLocker to minimize attack risks.
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has also released ScubaGear, a free software that automates Microsoft 365 configuration assessments and searches for security gaps. The tool has seen significant downloads since its release in October 2022, with over 30,000 recorded.
