French Consumers Turn Up Their Noses at American Brands Amid Trump’s Trade Tariffs

France’s consumers are increasingly rejecting American brands due to Donald Trump’s trade tariffs and anti-Europe rhetoric. A recent poll found that 67% of French people support boycotting US products, with almost a third already avoiding them.

The #BoycottUSA hashtag has spread across social media, reflecting a “historic collapse” of the US’s image in France. However, not all consumers are on board. Students and some workers claim they cannot afford to give up American brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Nike.

“I understand why people are suggesting we avoid American products, but it’s something people with money can afford to do,” said Jade, 15. “As students, we can’t.”

The poll found left-wing Democrats, older adults, and those with higher incomes were most in favor of the boycott. However, there is a gap between what consumers say they want to do and what they actually do.

Researchers say support for the US as a destination for education, travel, and business is at an all-time low. The number of people wanting to study or live in the US has dropped significantly since 2010.

A Facebook group set up by a farmer aims to encourage French consumers to choose local products over American brands. “It’s not about overthrowing Trump or the US economy – it’s about doing something to redress the balance,” said Édouard Roussez, the group’s founder.

While some consumers support the boycott, others are more skeptical. “I don’t go to McDonald’s and I don’t drink Coke,” said Delphine, 35. “There would have to be an obvious and not inconvenient alternative.”
