Jacques Audiard’s genre-bending musical drama Emilia Pérez has catapulted itself into Oscars contention after scooping four out of five top prizes at the 37th European Film Awards. The awards ceremony, held in Lucerne, Switzerland, also honored other notable films such as Karla Sofía Gascón’s best actress win for her portrayal of both trans woman Emilia Pérez and Juan “Manitas” Del Monte.
Audiard won best film, best director, and best screenplay for his Spanish-language musical about a Mexican cartel boss with a sex-change operation. The awards come as a surprise to critics who had expected more accolades following the mixed reviews received since its Cannes premiere in May.
Despite this, Audiard’s triumph is reminiscent of fellow French filmmaker Justine Triet’s success last year with Anatomy of a Fall, which also won four top prizes and grossed over $36 million worldwide. Emilia Pérez may not have replicated such commercial success yet but a prize haul like this could help boost its box office takings.
The European Film Awards recognize the best films from geographical Europe, including works produced by EU and non-EU member states. This year’s nominees included several documentaries, animated films, and short films that tackled complex themes such as human rights, asylum seekers, and environmental issues.
