French Rapist Receives Maximum Sentence for Months-Long Abuse of Ex-Wife

A disturbing trial in France has concluded with the conviction of 51 men who committed a monthslong mass rape and drugging of their former wife, Gisèle Pelicot. The group’s leader, Dominique Pelicot, received a maximum sentence of 20 years for aggravated rape.

Gisèle, 72, had solicited her anonymity to be revealed during the trial, allowing the world to see the horrors she endured at the hands of her husband and dozens of other rapists over a decade. Her bravery has galvanized women to demand change in France’s approach to addressing gender-based violence.

The trial exposed widespread misogyny and systemic sexual assault in French society. Dominique Pelicot was found guilty of orchestrating the crimes, using online dating sites to recruit victims who were unaware of his actions. His accomplices received varying sentences, with some receiving suspended prison terms.

Many are outraged by the lenient sentencing, including the children of Gisèle and Dominique Pelicot. Women’s rights activists have called for reform, citing France’s lax justice system, which fails to hold perpetrators accountable. The country’s low conviction rate for rape cases – only 1-4% of reported incidents result in convictions – has sparked concerns about trust in the justice system.

Gisèle testified that she was unaware of her husband’s actions and had never forgiven him. Her bravery during the trial has inspired many, but others have expressed disappointment and disillusionment with the verdicts.
