Two people have died in France after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) fans celebrated their Champions League victory with wild parties and vandalism. The deaths were reported in the south-west town of Dax and central Paris, where a 23-year-old man was killed after being hit by a vehicle.
In total, hundreds of people were arrested across France, including 491 in Paris, for causing disorder and possessing fireworks. Twenty-two police officers and seven firefighters were also injured.
PSG condemned the violence, stating that it does not represent the club’s values. French President Emmanuel Macron called the clashes “unacceptable” and promised to find those responsible.
The team’s victory parade in central Paris went ahead despite the clashes, with an increased police presence on hand to maintain order. Thousands of fans celebrated their win at the Parc des Princes stadium, while others sang and danced in the streets or blared car horns.
Police reported that 559 people were injured during the clashes, including 264 vehicles that were set on fire. One officer was placed in an induced coma after being injured by a firework.
