Fresno finally broke ground on a new 49-acre public sports complex in southeast Fresno, marking the culmination of two decades of planning and effort. The site, located at 2215 S. Peach Ave., was previously used as a federal government agricultural research facility.
The park has been spearheaded by former councilmember Luis Chavez and Jose Leon Barraza, who have both played key roles in its development. The complex will feature four soccer fields, open green space, outdoor fitness areas, and a building housing restrooms, a concession stand, and storage.
Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer attended the groundbreaking ceremony and praised the efforts of Chavez, Barraza, and other stakeholders who have contributed to the project. He noted that the park is a “collective effort” and emphasized the importance of inclusivity.
The first phase of the $11.7 million project will be completed by the end of the year, with funding coming from ARPA funds, impact fees, Measure P, and the general fund. Future phases will include baseball fields and pickleball courts.
The city is seeking public input on a name for the park, presenting 10 options in an online survey. The council will make the final decision on the name.
Fresno Councilman Jose Leon Barraza emphasized that the project is a “success story” due to its perseverance and dedication from various stakeholders. Mayor Jerry Dyer also noted that the park’s completion is a testament to the importance of investing in community infrastructure.
