A Fresno man, Antonio de Jesus Orozco Montes Deoca, has been sentenced to over 14 years in prison for his role in a deadly marijuana DUI crash in 2022. The incident occurred on September 17, 2022, along State Route 180 near Kerman, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old woman and serious injuries to four others.
Deoca pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing great bodily injury, according to the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office. The crash happened after Deoca crossed double-yellow lines and slammed head-on into another vehicle driven by Sandy Orellana-Mendoza.
Blood tests revealed that Deoca had a substantial amount of marijuana in his system at the time of the crash, which investigators say was severely impaired. Judge Gabriel Brickey handed down the sentence.
The incident serves as a reminder that driving under the influence includes not only alcohol but also drugs, including prescription and illegal substances.
