Fresno police issued citations to 145 drivers for using their hands-free cell phones while driving, during a recent enforcement operation. This is part of California’s effort to reduce distracted driving and enforce its ban on handheld phone use behind the wheel.
In 2008, California prohibited drivers from holding or using phones in vehicles, including talking, texting, or accessing apps. Drivers caught violating this rule face fines and penalties, including a point added to their record for second offenses within 36 months.
Police encourage motorists to pull over safely to make calls or navigate, and to silence or stow their phones before driving. The operation was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
