Fresno State Agrees to $900k Settlement Over Lacrosse Program Cuts

Fresno State University has agreed to a settlement with six former female lacrosse players, ending an almost five-year-long Title IX class action lawsuit. The university will pay $900,000 in fees to the plaintiffs’ attorneys and hire a third-party “Title IX Reviewer” to conduct a gender equity review. The plan will ensure the school remains compliant with Title IX requirements and develop a long-term gender equity plan lasting until June 2029.

The settlement was approved by US Senior District Judge Kimberly Mueller on November 17, 2025. Fresno State agreed to implement changes aimed at reducing the participation gap between male and female sports programs, including adding a women’s varsity team if necessary.

Co-counsel Arthur Bryant described the agreement as “a major victory for all female athletes” and emphasized the importance of fighting for equal opportunities and treatment under Title IX. The settlement marks a significant step towards promoting gender equity in college athletics.
