A local educator, Leah Seneng, has died from rabies after attempting to help a bat in her classroom. Seneng, 60, found the bat in mid-October and tried to take it outside despite not displaying any initial symptoms of the disease. However, about a month later, she fell ill and was immediately put into a coma at the hospital. She died four days later on November 22. This is the first human rabies death in Fresno County since 1992. The health department has administered vaccines to healthcare workers and household contacts, and officials are still investigating other possible exposures. Seneng taught art at Bryant Middle School and was remembered by friends as a kind and vibrant person who loved exploring the world through her passion for arts. A GoFundMe account has been set up to support her family during this time.
