Fresno’s Search for Permanent Police Chief Continues

**
Fresno’s search for a permanent police chief has reached its fifth candidate after holding four community meetings and ending on January 3, with an initial application deadline of the same day. The interim chief is Mindy Casto, supported by Councilmember Mike Karbassi. Deputy Chief Mark Salazar, who previously applied in both 2019 and 2020-21, did not apply this time but turned down an offer to lead Vallejo PD. Fresno’s last permanent chief was Paco Balderrama, whose affairs led to his resignation a month later.

The city appointed Casto as acting then interim chief, with no new information on candidates or the selection panel available from City Hall despite ongoing efforts. Questions remain unanswered about the number of applicants and their identities. Councilmembers, including Annalisa Perea, have not been informed recently, though they supported Casto in her role.

The police union and Karbassi also back Casto, noting her suitability for the position. Meanwhile, Salazar’s decision to decline was due to timing issues after previously applying during another search.

Fresno remains without a permanent chief since June 2024 following Paco Balderrama’s misconduct revelations. The current process is ongoing with community input and no immediate hiring expected, though questions about the selection criteria persist.
