FromSoftware Ditches Maidens for Elderly Gentleman Rat in The Duskbloods

FromSoftware, the developer behind Elden Ring and Dark Souls, is making a significant departure from its traditional game design with The Duskbloods. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive will focus on PvPvE multiplayer action, a new direction for the series. However, this change goes beyond just gameplay mechanics.

Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has revealed that the character equivalent of the Fire Keeper from Dark Souls will no longer be a traditional female guide. Instead, an “elderly gentleman” rat will take on this role. Miyazaki stated that he wanted to try something new and “Nintendo-esque,” resulting in a change from the series’ usual doll-like maidens.

This shift is part of FromSoftware’s efforts to mix things up and appeal to a broader audience. The success of Elden Ring’s Miriel, also known as the “Pope Turtle,” suggests that this approach can be successful. The Duskbloods will be released on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
