Frontier Airlines Seeks to Shake Up Hawaii Airline Market

Frontier Airlines, known for its ultra-low-cost model, is aiming to enter the Hawaii market with plans to expand to Paine Field in Everett, Washington. This move poses a direct challenge to hometown incumbent Alaska/Hawaiian Airlines.

Paine Field, which is considered Alaska territory, offers Frontier a cheaper alternative to operate than Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac). However, this expansion plan still hinges on securing the necessary ETOPS 180 certification for long-haul flights over the Pacific. This certification remains unclear, and its timeline could significantly impact when Frontier begins flying to Hawaii.

Critics argue that Frontier’s low-cost play may appeal to budget-conscious travelers but at a cost of comfort and overall quality. Concerns include cramped seating, reliability issues, and added fees that can make long-haul flights difficult to sell. Some residents worry about the potential for over-tourism and its impact on Hawaii’s already strained infrastructure.

On the other hand, proponents see Frontier’s entry as an opportunity for competition and lower ticket prices, potentially making Hawaii more accessible for visitors who feel priced out by traditional carriers. The potential for a reshuffling of routes could also benefit Alaska/Hawaiian Airlines if Frontier focuses on underpriced travelers who wouldn’t normally fly to Hawaii.

While some speculate that Frontier won’t make it work due to the high costs and complexity associated with ETOPS, others see this as an opportunity for competition and growth. With its chairman Bill Franke having experience in starting and operating successful airlines, many predict Frontier will bring A-321 jets to Hawaii sooner rather than later.
