Frosthaven, a board game that surpasses its predecessor Gloomhaven in complexity and ambition, is set to conquer the world of video games. The game asks its players a lot, from picking two action cards with multiple options to navigating the challenges of setting up and playing with friends.
A PC version is on the horizon, making it easier for players to explore the baddie-infested tundra. A closed beta test begins on March 27, followed by early access in 2025. The game will feature over 35 quests across two acts, with more than 130 planned. It also includes single-player and up to four-player multiplayer modes.
Frosthaven boasts a high-profile team, led by Julian Gollop, creator of X-COM. Isaac Childres, the creator of Gloomhaven, serves as a consultant on the PC version. The developer aims to replicate the board game experience while making it more accessible for newcomers and veterans alike.
A preview session with the developer offered an insight into the game’s mechanics and world-building. Although some aspects, such as art and music, are still under development, the game seems poised to succeed in leveraging technology to streamline gameplay, freeing players to focus on strategy.
