The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent warning and recalled certain brand of frozen supplement milkshakes due to listeria concerns. The recall affects Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental shakes from Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc.
The FDA says 38 illnesses have been reported, with 37 people hospitalized and 11 deaths. Most of the cases involved residents in long-term care facilities or were hospitalized before falling ill. The outbreak dates back to 2018 and has affected states including Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Texas, and others.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause severe illness, especially among older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. If you have experienced flu-like symptoms after consuming contaminated food within two months, seek medical care and report your eating habits.
The FDA is actively investigating the outbreak and has advised consumers to discard the affected milkshakes. Manufacturer Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc. initiated the recall and alerted food distributor Lyons Magnus LLC to the issue.
