Travis Decker, the military veteran at the center of a three-month-long manhunt for his three young daughters, has been confirmed dead by authorities. Human remains found on Grindstone Mountain were matched to Decker through DNA testing. Decker’s ex-wife had previously asked for restrictions on his interactions with their children due to his worsening mental health issues.
The discovery marks the end of a long and tragic search for Decker, who was facing state charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping, as well as a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Authorities said they are glad to have found closure in the case, but acknowledged that it has taken time to confirm Decker’s death.
Decker was an Army infantryman from 2013 to 2021 and had extensive training in wilderness survival. His daughters’ bodies were found at a Chelan County campground in June, and investigators followed a key fob discovery to perform grid searches in the area.
